2013 Year in Review…our top 5 travel experiences

Well, 2013 has been another busy and exciting year for Travels4Couples.  We have had quite the year and wanted to share some of the major highlights with you.  Here are the 5 top travel experiences we encountered in 2013.   Happy New Year to everyone!

1. Seeing the sunrise over Napa Valley, USA in a hot air balloon

It is easy to see why this would be a highlight for anyone this year.  It is such a surreal experience to literally be floating above the ground, going wherever the wind may take you.  We were smiling in awe the whole entire journey and took so many Hot Air Ballooning photos.  There is so much more we could say about the trip…

2. Going on Safari and “Glamping”

There is this great place in Santa Rosa called Safari West, where they have brought in a large number of African animals.  They have made it into a “safari” experience by having trucks you ride on as you go through the different animal enclosures to get up close and personal with the animals (sometimes too close).  It is a great experience for any kids at heart and gives you a little taste of what an actual African safari might be like.  To add to the true safari feel, Safari West has created a unique experience where guests can stay in a luxury tent on the grounds over-looking the animals.  When they say luxury tents, they really mean luxury.  It truly is “glamping,” as the rooms are fancier than most of the hotel rooms we have stayed in!  It was a one of a kind experience in California and we are hoping to go back some day.

3. Touring around in Havana, Cuba

It was a long time dream of ours to visit Cuba and see the historic center of its capital, Havana.  We had heard so many stories of the culture there and how it seems to be a place trapped in time in the 1950s.  Many of the cars on the road are from this era and more recent products, like foods and drinks, are all locally made.  It seemed like such an intriguing way of life.  This year, we were fortunate enough to be able to live out this dream and it did not disappoint!  We loved strolling through Old Havana and taking pictures of all the old buildings with their vibrant colours.  We just love our collection of photos of Old Havana!  It was so cool to see all the classic cars making their way around the city and we fell in love with the people.  They are some of the friendliest people we have come across in any country!

4. Riding the dunes on the Oregon Coast

This has been on Evan’s bucket list for numerous years and, even though Oregon is not a long way from Vancouver, Canada, he had yet to make it to the Oregon coast.  That all changed in August 2013.  We took a road trip down the coast (and into California) with Evan’s parents and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  The dunes are on the southern coast, so we had to wait until our last day in Oregon before we got to test out our driving skills on the sand dunes.  The dune buggies can be rented for you to take out yourself and motor around in the sand.  These things are amazing in their ability to go straight up mountainous mounds of sand and go straight down the other side!  It was fun dune bugging in Oregon and zipping around everywhere, seeing what heights we could reach as we went!

5. Staying in the presidential suite of the Fairmont Seattle

We take an annual trip down to Seattle, Washington, USA each fall with Evan’s brothers to see a Seattle Seahawks football game.  On the trip this year we were able to book our stay in the Fairmont Olympic, one of Seattle’s historic buildings.  We were pretty excited just to experience what the hotel had to offer, as we have heard many great things about the Fairmont brand in locations worldwide.  Our experience got even better when we arrived and learned that we had been moved to a top floor PRESIDENTIAL SUITE!!!!  This was a 2000 square foot room complete with three couches, a 12-person dining room table and a grand piano…yes I just said grand piano!  The room was also one of the few in the whole building that had a view to the harbor.  It was definitely one of the fancier rooms we have ever stay in!
