A Review of the Summerland Waterfront Resort

Summerland, BC - Summerland Waterfront Resort Bedroom

Our recent travels involved a road trip to the interior of British Columbia, Canada and we had an excellent opportunity to spend a couple nights at the Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa.  We have been to the Okanagan many times, as it is a short drive from our home of Vancouver, British Columbia, but we had never been to the Penticton and Summerland area until this trip.  The weather was fantastic while we were there, so we got a great idea of what the resort has to offer…and we were impressed.  It is a great resort for couples to travel to, but works well for families as well!

The Resort

Summerland, BC - Summerland Waterfront Resort

Summerland Waterfront resort is located directly on the waterfront of Okanagan Lake.  The buildings, in combination with a neighbouring restaurant, make a “U” shape right on the shores.  The two buildings that are considered the resort run away from the shores of the lake, therefore there are very few direct lakeview rooms, but most rooms have a partial lakeview.  We found that it was nice to sit out on the patio of our room to get the best view possible.

The restaurant, which is not directly a part of the resort (the resort does not have a restaurant directly connected to it), is located right along the water and provides excellent scenery and seemed to be a good place to eat (although we never ate there during our stay).

They have a nice, but small, beach area to enjoy and we found it quite a nice place for a dip, although a tiny bit rocky right on the edge of the water.

They also had a nice grass area that we loved hanging out on during the day, but could also be used as a play area for kids.

There is a boardwalk that heads in front of the resort and continues for a long ways north along the lake that is a great place to go for a walk.

As mentioned above, the resort is right on the lakeshore, so it is the ideal location to enjoy some relaxation and couples time together!  It is below the town of Summerland, so it is a short (and we mean short) drive up to the main town center.  This was very convenient for us, as we went and got groceries so we barely had to leave the resort during our stay.  If you do not have a vehicle, but need to make your way into town, you can look into the option of rental scooters through the resort.  Summerland is about a 15-minute drive from Penticton, which is a large town for people looking for more activities to enjoy on solid ground.

You, of course, are smack dab in the middle of Okanagan wine country, so you can head out for the day in any direction to sample some amazing wines!

There are plenty of options for getting out on the water during your stay.  There is a rental shop where you can rent many motorized or non-motorized watercraft.  You could rent a kayak, paddle board or peddle boat to take a nice easy cruise on the lake or you could rent a motor boat to zip around the lake or use to do some wakeboarding, water-skiing, knee-boarding or tubing (and they have these for you to rent as well).  Another great feature is that you can sign up to have the resort staff do the driving while you are out being towed around if you are not comfortable with driving yourself (or do not have a boat license).

The pool area is nice with many loungers, although there were not many umbrellas to provide shade.  If you enjoy the pool a lot, there are rooms with direct access to the pool deck that you may wish to request prior to your arrival.  Be prepared though, we found the pool to be quite cold (it did not seem to be a heated pool).

As mentioned earlier, the resort does not have a restaurant directly connected to it; however, there is one between the two buildings.  However, we did not find this problematic as one of the nicest aspects of the resort, due to the fact it is a rent by owner resort, is that the rooms have full kitchens.  We actually made most of our meals in the kitchen and enjoyed it at different spots on the grounds.

The resort has provided a set of BBQs for all guests to use.  We took full advantage of this amenity during our stay and had some delicious ribs!  There is also a small café in the main resort building (with reception, pool and fitness area) that provides small snacks and a delicious breakfast.   We tried the French toast in the morning and it was so good!

The resort also offers the Beyond Wrapture Body & Day Spa, but we did not have time to experience its services, therefore, we cannot comment on the services offered.

Activities Near the Resort

Wine tasting, we don’t know if we need to say more, but it is the thing to do in the Okanagan these days.  Summerland is an awesome place for wine.  We visited many of the wineries in Summerland, particularly along Bottleneck Drive and we now have a case full of delightful wines.  If you are wanting to wine taste more, Penticton, Naramata, West Kelowna and OK Falls are all within an hour drive and have many different wineries for all types of wine lovers!  Just a warning, though… make sure you have lots of room in your car/luggage because it will be hard to leave this area without a crate full of wines!

The Kettle Valley Railroad takes its journey through Summerland.  We had the opportunity to take this classic steam train ride along the Okanagan’s famous rail line that includes two of the historic trestle bridges.  It is a worthwhile half-day trip for couples traveling through Summerland!

The Downside

As you will see with all our reviews, there are always things about resorts (often small) that do not mesh well with our preferences.  At Summerland Waterfront Resort there are very few details that bothered us.  One issue we had was how small the beach was.  When we were there it was not too bad, as the beach was not that busy.  However, if there were a number of people trying to enjoy the beach at the same time, it could be very crowded.  We struggle to find anything else we were not pleased with about the resort as we enjoyed our stay so much.

Thank you to Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa for hosting us during this leg of our Okanagan road trip.  As always, the views and opinions in this post are our own.

When you stay at a resort, what is the most important amenity for you? Pool? Beach? Spa? Other?
