A Review of the Tigh-Na-Mara Resort

Vancouver Island 2015

As previewed in some great photos, we recently journeyed by ferry over to Vancouver Island. Our first stop on the road was at the Tigh-Na-Mara Resort in Parksville, BC. We really enjoyed our stay at the resort and thought we would share some of the things that stuck out for us.

The Grounds

Before we lead anyone into a mixed message, the Tigh-Na-Mara Resort is designed to be more like a camping and hotel experience. It was not the grounds one might expect to see in the highest end resorts. It felt more like the set up you would see at a campsite. The one thing we felt, though, is that it definitely works at this resort; makes it something different. We really enjoyed wandering the roads through the forest-like setting and there were many things to check out throughout the resort. It has a rustic feel, but it also has everything we wanted; a beach, a pool, a nice restaurant and a great spa.

The Rooms

We can only speak of one type of room, as we stayed in the One Bedroom Rustic Log Cabin and were not able to see any other cabins. The Log Cabins were a fantastic idea and added something unique to the resort. These cabins included a kitchen and provided a BBQ to do some cooking…which we took advantage of a couple of times. The cabins are cozy, but the décor is pretty cool (a very rustic feel). There are two other types of rooms that may peak your interest… they have regular hotel style rooms, some of them with what looked like amazing oceanviews (though, as mentioned, we did not have a chance to see these rooms) or spa rooms that are more secluded, nearer the spa and include some special extras…like a Jacuzzi tub.

The Restaurant

The restaurant is a good spot for a meal. It is somewhat surprisingly modern in a rustic surrounding, and it feels like a fine dining experience. We had delicious meals and were very pleased with the level of service and friendly staff. Our only regret was that we were not able to try it more often.

The Spa

This is quite likely the gem of the resort. The spa is spectacular! It is three floors of treatment areas enhanced by some nice, unique touches. They have a waiting room complete with flavoured water and fresh fruit for you to enjoy while you wait for your treatment. They have a fun restaurant that you can eat at where you can only dine in a robe provided by the spa. And they have a special area they call the grotto, where they have a wonderful treatment pool, arctic shower and hot tub you can enjoy for free after your treatment. The grotto is even designed to look like a natural grotto and you could easily spend the day there if you chose to.

The Beach

Probably the highlight of the resort is it’s close location to Rathtrevor Beach. This is a wonderful stretch of beach on the Strait of Georgia. This is a haven for sea life, including crabs clams, sand dollars and even sea otters. We loved relaxing on the beach and checking out the tide pools for plenty of these creatures.

The Downside

As with every place we have been, it is not all rosy. We would not be honest if we said there was nothing wrong with the places we visit. First, we mentioned above the rooms were cozy, even a bit on the smallish side. Also, the roads are all dirt and the dirt seemed to travel into the cabins. That meant there was a bit of dirt on the floors, which doesn’t really bother us, but may be bigger issues for others.

Overall we had a nice experience at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort, although it is quite different from other resorts we have been to recently. We certainly wouldn’t hesitate to go back again. Although, we may try one of the oceanview rooms next time.

Do you prefer luxury on your vacation of a rustic, down to earth vacation?
