Best Sunsets Around the World…and Why We Love These Destinations!

Big Island of Hawaii, United States of America

The Big Island in Hawaii is such an incredibly diverse place to explore.  With its lush, green landscape in the north to the black lava fields in the south, there is an enormous array of things to see and do on this less touristy area of the state of Hawaii.  We love how this island retains its Hawaiian charm both in the atmosphere and the people.  Not to be missed when visiting, is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you can observe Hawaii’s active volcano.  We also recommend driving up to Waikoloa and checking out this developing area on the west coast of the island.  It is while staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village that we watched this gorgeous sunset.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

There are not many destinations that are as picturesque as Bora Bora.  The stunning Mount Otemanu is the backdrop to an incredible azure blue lagoon teeming with multicolor tropical fish.  Made famous as the ultimate destination for romance and couples travel, it is not surprising that there are unbelievable sunsets as well.  While staying at theHilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spawe captured this beautiful sunset above the overwater bungalows.

Whitehouse, Jamaica

On a trip designed for ultimate relaxation, we had the opportunity to visit Sandals Whitehouse located on an immaculate stretch of white sand beach.  Normally, our vacations are busy, busy, busy as we try to see and do as many things as possible in the city/country.  However, during our stay at Sandals Whitehouse, we lounged by the beach and pool and enjoyed some excellent meals.  One very special meal was on the beach during sunset where we were able to watch this amazing scene unfold.

Maui, United States of America

The island of Maui is an exquisite tropical paradise.  We love visiting the Hawaiian Islands and Maui is one of our favourites.  With pristine white sand beaches, lush tropical forests, and sumptuous cuisine, it is a travelers’ delight.   We particularly like the Kaanapali Beach area and with its location on the west side of the island, you are rewarded almost every night with a gorgeous sunset.  We watched this sunset while strolling along the beach path on Kaanapali Beach.

Moorea, French Polynesia

Although the island of Moorea is not as well-known as its big sister, Bora Bora, we loved its laid back atmosphere and non-touristy feel.  With only 4 resorts on Moorea, the quaintness of the island shines through.  While staying at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa, we were fortunate to witness several remarkable sunsets but this photo ended up being one of our favourites.  We loved being able to pour ourselves a glass of wine in our lagoon bungalow and sit back and watch the sun set over the turquoise lagoon.  It was nothing short of spectacular!

Mykonos, Greece

The island of Mykonos which is part of the Cyclades is best known for its white washed buildings with sapphire blue accents and its nightclubs on the beach.  We spent several days here exploring Mykonos Town and the surrounding island by ATV.  We loved strolling through the quaint towns and relaxing on the impressive beaches.  One night while enjoying dinner in what they call “Little Venice”, we captured this striking shot of the sun dipping into the Mediterranean ocean.  It makes us what to return immediately!

  1. Gorgeous! I think there are beautiful sunsets in every place of the world, you just have to find the right place to go see them 🙂 I never really saw a “Wow!” sunset in Washington until I went to the good spots

    • Thanks, Samantha! That is very true, I guess it all comes down to location, location, location! 🙂 We often like to scout out a good place to watch the sunset earlier in the day and then get there early to enjoy the whole experience.

    • We would imagine that a Santorini sunset must be fantastic. We were only able to visit Santorini during the day and therefore missed the sunset 🙁 We hope you make it to Bora Bora!
