Paris by Picnic – Top 5 Spots

Paris - Eiffel Tower
Paris is a beautiful city known for its many gardens and well maintained green spaces.  When we travel to a city, we are always on the lookout for opportunities to do something the locals enjoy.  So, why not take a picnic in one of Paris’ many parks.

During the work week, you will often find many local Parisians taking their lunch hour in a park.  This is such a common part of their culture that metal chairs can usually be found in the parks that you can drag up close to one of the fountains and sit back and relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.  Not only is this a special way to spend the lunch hour, it is also a great way to save some money while travelling.

Sometimes in the craziness of trying to see all of the landmark buildings in a city, you miss out on some of the natural wonders.  So, why not visit them for lunch with a picnic as you have to eat anyways, right?  We recommend finding a local grocery store and grabbing some bread, cheese, meat, fruit and some drinks or whatever looks good to you on the day.  Many grocery stores or supermarkets also have a grab and go section where you can buy pre-made sandwich, cups of fruit, etc. which are much cheaper than buying at a local café.  With your lunch in hand, head on over to one of the parks we suggest below for a wonderful experience.

1)  The Parc du Champ de Mars – This park is rectangular in shape and is located between the Eiffel Tower and the Ecole Militaire.  With sweeping views of Paris’ most iconic monument it is a place that we love to hang out when we are in Paris.  You can pick a spot close to the Tower and enjoy your meal as you appreciate the height of this magnificent structure.  Or walk toward the Ecole Militaire to place the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop to your picnic.  We recommend bringing something to do, like a Frisbee, if you want to spend the afternoon lazing around this park.

2)  The Tuileries Garden –The Tuileries are located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde.  Grab one of the free chairs and find a spot that appeals to you, whether next to one of the fountains or near the gardens.  Here we are putting our feet up next to one of the fountains enjoying some good food and taking some time to relax after all of the sightseeing.

3)  Jardin du Luxembourg – A popular spot to relax, people watch and enjoy the good weather, the Jardin du Luxembourg is another recommended spot for a picnic lunch located in the 6th arrondisement.  You are not allowed to sit on the grass here but there are many of the free green chairs to use.  A nice spot is around the main fountain near the Luxembourg Palace.

4)  Along the Seine (between Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame) – Not only is it a beautiful place to take a stroll but the promenades on either side of the Seine river are also lined with benches and offer a perfect spot to stop for lunch and watch the boats move up and down this famous river.

5)  Parc de Versailles – Although not directly in the heart of Paris, the Parc de Versailles and its palace are located only about a 30 minute train ride (not metro) from downtown Paris.  Here you will often find local Parisians out with their families enjoying this enormous park and gardens.  There are several large fountains and a fountain show to entertain you as you grab a spot on the grass or benches to enjoy your lunch.  The main gardens close to the palace are blocked off but if you venture further into the park, you will find lawn that you can find your perfect lunch spot.

    • Glad you enjoyed the post, Kelly. Paris is so full of amazing spots, it is hard to see and fit everything in when you visit. We too have many spots that we still need to check out even though we have been to Paris twice.

    • We also love the magic of Paris. There is something really special about the city and perhaps it is all the parks and green spaces that make it feel less hectic than others. And, what better way to enjoy the parks than with a picnic, right?
