Exploring the Seattle Aquarium in Photos

Seattle Aquarium

Located on the banks of Puget Sound is the Seattle Aquarium, just a short stroll from the famous Pike Place Market.  As part of Pier 59, the aquarium is built out over the water and it makes use of some of the natural salt water below in some of its tanks.  We have been to Seattle, Washington many times before in our travels but this was the first time that we had a visited the Seattle Aquarium.

We ended up spending about 3 hours exploring all of the exhibits and checking out the huge variety of marine life.  Upon entering we were amazed by the massive Window on Washington Waters filled with many examples of local sea life.  There was even an aquarium staff member scuba diving in the tank and delivering some information about the sea creatures to the audience gathered around.

Next we entered the interactive tide pool exhibit which contains several open pools with sea anemones, sea stars, sea cucumbers and other inter-tidal animals.  Here, you are allowed to touch and feel the various different sea creatures and ask questions of aquarium staff, who are readily available at each pool.  This is the perfect spot for kids to get up close and personal with local sea life.

Other great exhibits at the Seattle Aquarium included the Pacific Coral Reef, Shore Birds and Alcids, Harbor Seals, Sea Otters, Northern Fur Seals and River Otters.  There is also an Under Water Dome where you are below a tank filled with animals that live around Seattle in Puget Sound.  As the fish and sea life swim above you, it is hard not to become mesmerized with their grace and beauty.
