Planning that Stay-cation!!

Unfortunately, traveling is not always an option.  There are many reasons that you can’t take the trip you have been dreaming about, including inability to get away from work, finances, or family to look after.  Although these reasons may be a road block to you getting on a plane, it should not stop you from “getting away” from your lives for a while.  The perfect way to do this under these circumstances is to have a “stay-cation” or vacation at home.  We have put together some ideas for you to get the most out of your stay-cation!

Stay in a nice hotel downtown – Yes, it does cost money, which may be an issue for you, but even if you can only afford it for a couple of nights it is worth it.  It is nice to be able to walk to many of the things in the center of the city.  It also feels a lot more like a vacation when you are not sleeping in your own bed.  As a mini – bonus, leave the kids with the grandparents for a few days and experience being a couple again!

Find out what there is to do in your town – In many towns there are obvious attractions that all the residents know about, but there are many gems in towns that are not as well known.  We suggest you learn about as many of these as possible and go out and see them.  Your local tourism board is a great resource for places to visit on your stay-cation.

Check out the Local Zoo or Aquarium – We can’t be sure because we haven’t been everywhere (yet anyway ;)), but we think that pretty much every city has either a zoo or an aquarium.  We have been to many in our travels (including both in our hometown) and we have yet to have a bad experience at them.  They are particularly good for families if you are doing a family stay-cation.

Beach Day – Pack a picnic lunch and head off to your local water source whether that is the ocean or lake.  A fabulous day on the beach, if your city has one, is an excellent de-stresser.   Take along a good book if you want to really relax or a Frisbee or football if you want to be more active.  Life doesn’t get much better than the beach!

Be a tourist in your own town – DON’T HOLD BACK.  We tell people this all the time, it is fun to act like a complete tourist in your hometown.  Do whatever you might do if you were in a new city.  This might include taking a bus tour, entering all the big tourist attractions you say are “so lame” for locals and take tons of pictures!  We think you would be surprised how much fun you have.

Well, go out and have your staycation!  We think if you do it right, you can’t help but enjoy yourself… happy “traveling”!

How else can you enjoy a staycation?

  1. Nice suggestion and at the right time too. My hubby was unable to take time off for a vacation so I was just planning a weekend trip nearby and what I can do to make it interesting. I have also some more ideas on the travel planning tool I use-Mygola(www.mygola.com/search)

    Cheers!
