Up in the Air…in Maui!

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

Getting ready to head out on our tour!

In our books, there are very few things more spectacular than a helicopter tour anywhere, but add in the scenery of the picturesque island of Maui, Hawaii and you have a winning combination!  We were lucky enough to experience this first hand on our recent trip to Maui thanks to Blue Hawaiian Helicopters.

Right from the initial check in Blue Hawaiian Helicopters provided a first class experience!  We arrived with a great deal of anticipation and were greeted by smiling faces.  As safety is of the utmost importance, we were shown a short safety video and given a safety debriefing before entering the helicopter.

The helicopter looked like it came straight off of the new helicopter lot (yes, we realize this isn’t a real thing…but you get the point)!  It was spotless and the entire thing looked like it was kept in the best shape.

We took the “Maui Spectacular” tour in an Eco-Star helicopter, which has floor to ceiling windows for the front passengers.  We were led to the helicopter pad, eagerly waiting to find out where we would sit.  As luck would have it, we got the front row, the best seats of all!  Once boarded, we met our wonderful pilot for the day, Glenda, who had been flying for 22 years (7 years with Blue Hawaiian) and took to the skies.

The “Maui Spectacular” takes passengers on a complete tour of the entire island and includes a stop in the Ulupalakua area for some amazing views and a champagne toast not to be missed :).  We began taking in the West Maui Mountains and the valleys contained within.  Some of the valleys are too dangerous to see on land, so the area can only be seen from the air (not an easy task in itself).

Our pilot handled it with relative ease and gave us some up close and personal views of some ridiculous waterfalls!  We continued along the coast passing over towns like Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei on our way towards the upcountry, where we would make the aforementioned stop, over looking much of the island and Molokini Crater.

Our pilot, Glenda, touched down gracefully on the slopes of Haleakala at Ulupalakua Ranch where we were able to get out of the helicopter, stretch our legs and take in the sweeping views of the pacific ocean.

We were also treated to some pineapple champagne, which was delicious!!!

The stop lasted for about 20 minutes and then we loaded back into the helicopter for the rest of our island tour.

After taking in the breath-taking views at the stopover, we continued upwards to Haleakala volcano to see an awe-inspiring view into the Crater, which was being engulfed by cloud.

We finished the tour traveling along the northern coastline of Maui, passing the towns of Hana (and the famous Road to Hana) and Paia.  We were continuously exposed to some of the most sensational scenery in the world for 1 ½ hours.

All through the tour, Glenda provided us passengers with plenty of historic information about the island, which we found fascinating (for example, we learned that Maui, for intents and purposes, no longer grows pineapples!!!!)!

When we returned to the airport, we were sad that it was already over.  The 1 ½ hour trip seemed to fly (haha…get it) by in 10 minutes!!  We LOVED every minute of it and would not hesitate to do this again.  If you are in Maui, we definitely recommend you find time to try this out!

We would like to thank Blue Hawaiian Helicopters for hosting us for this once in a lifetime experience.  We cannot say enough good things!  To follow along more with our Maui flight, check out the hashtag #flyovermaui on twitter.

Have you done a helicopter tour during your travels?  Where was it or where would you like to do one?

  1. I have never ridden in a helicopter. I have ridden in a biplane over islands, which was amazing. I am sure the views were worth it. You make me want to head to Hawaii right now 🙂
